The castle «Schloss Laufen»
was mentioned in historical documents for the first time in 858 p.c.. It was used as main residence by the barons (Freiherren) of Laufen. The baron (Schlossherr) or his governor (Vogt) ruled over the neighboring villages. This was done for the bishop (Bischof) of Konstanz, who owned the land. In 1544 the town of Zürich bought the castle and had considerable alterations done (1544 - 1547). After the French Revolution the power of the nobility came to an abrupt end. The castle went on lease and in 1845 it changed into private property. Since 1941 the castle has belonged to the Kanton of Zürich.
From Schloss Laufen a path leads down alongside the splashing water to the lookout point «Känzeli», enabling a breathtaking view of the stunning Rhine Falls.
